Art by Handmade on the South Coast

Hilary Metcalf

Hilary has a life-long love of textiles and stitch, having started out as an embroidery teacher, and later becoming an accredited patchwork and quilting teacher with Canberra Quilters.

In recent years, several visits to Japan have resulted in a collection of vintage fabrics gathered from shrine and temple flea markets.

Handbags

These are lovingly crafted into bags, pouches and other useful items that honour the Japanese tradition of Mottainai and Wabi-sabi – a reverence for all things which decries waste and embraces the beauty of the imperfect.
